Grief is a personal, powerful and often intense and overwhelming emotion and each person goes through grief emotions in their own way. Grief can create symptoms that cause physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual conflict and can even escalate into depression and anxiety.
Grief is actually a healthy and natural process after the loss of something or someone important to an individual. Grief becomes unhealthy when the individual becomes stuck in the emotion and this is known as “complicated grief.” This can create ongoing strife in all areas of the individual’s life including marital discord, employment hardships and turmoil in relationships. Avoidant behaviours are common after a significant loss. Support through grief can allow the individual to heal in an emotionally healthy way and help to facilitate recovery.
